Second Street Construction Update #2

Hello Langley.  Here is the latest information the Second Street Project.  In general, the project is moving along as planned without any major construction issues.  The city very much appreciates the support and cooperation from the community to make this project a success.

Construction Schedule

The contractor is currently installing the new water main on the north side of the street.  Water system flushing must occur before the new water main goes into operation and the services are connected.  Due to the cold weather the water system flushing has been delayed a week and will now occur on February 10th and 11th.  Water service connections to the new main will begin on February 18th.  The contractor will provide advance notice to businesses before any disruption of service.  We do not expect major service disruptions.  The contractor will strive to minimize service disruptions as much as possible.  For restaurants and coffee shops on Second Street we will attempt to do the service connections in the later afternoon when the disruption will have less of an impact.  We will provide direct notice before the service interruption is set to occur.

The crushed rock roadway base will be installed on the north side beginning on February 11th.  Demolition of the south side of the street is scheduled to begin on February 26th.  Installation of the rain garden and landscape planter beds, irrigation piping, underground electric connections (to planter beds and plaza), art sculpture foundations, seat walls, stairs and bollard foundations will begin on February 27th and continue through March.

Post Office Connection to Third Street

The City is also moving forward with installing a connection from the post office parking lot to Third Street.  The Second Street entrance to the post office will be blocked off for some period of time towards the end of the project while the concrete street is being installed.  The City will consider making the connection permanent at the close of the project in consultation with the post office and other stakeholders.

Langley is Open for Business + Parking

Please continue to spread the word that Langley is very much open for business during construction.  There is ample free parking available in and around the downtown area.  For business owners and employees please consider parking off street in either the Methodist Church, Island Church or Third Street parking lots to free of prime street parking for customers.
